ibm t30 will just shutoff
ibm t30 will just shutoff
I have a T30 Laptop and I was having problems where the laptop would be working and for no reason shuts off. I thought the laptop was overheating so I replaced the fan. I am having the same problem. The fan will run when first started then it will turn off. What controls turning the fan on?
Does this sound like the laptop is overheating which is shutting it off?

Does the laptop feel VERY hot prior to shutdown? If not, you have a problem elsewhere on the motherboard...
Good luck.

Try downloading mobmeter and monitoring the CPU temps prior to shutdown...

This is one of the most common failure modes in the T2x series. Maybe it infects T3xes too. See this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=

What is the TYPE number of your T30 (on the bottom, looks like TYPE 2366-87G).
Have you opened it recently, perhaps taken off the CPU fan/cooler, and not put in fresh thermal paste?

and - did you apply correctly the fresh thermal paste?
if your T30 is a 2.0 or higher cpu model - did you get the fan2 for it?
there is another program for monitoring the notebook, setting the cpu speed and shutdown/protection temps - it's called NHC - Notebook Hardware Control

t30 just shutting off
I have replaced the fan with new thermal paste.
I run the computer with the keyboard removed so I can see if the fan is turning on.
The computer just will stop.
Now I have another issue if the computer is plugged into the powersupply it will not restart I unplug the powersupply and the computer will now restart.
Is this a motherboard problem?

Hi Peter; saw this thread and thought I would give some of my experience as I had problems in that area:
I found that it is very important to apply the themal paste properly. You need to put a very small dab in the center of the
CPU and spread it out with a razor blade across the whole CPU and scrape away any excess. It is a very thin layer.
I have also had the problem of it going south and having to remove the battery at times to reboot the system as it would get hung up. Have not had any problems since I replaced the fan and applied the paste as stated.
It is important that you have the right fan also as stated in a previous update.

it won't shutdown if it has the "small" fan
my T30 is running for 3-4 months with the 1.8 fan (it's a 2.0) and it's fine - under maximum load it reaches 82 degreed celsius - and at idle it runsunder 50
but i've used AS5 - it makes a HUGE difference - almost 5 degrees

t30 shutting off when hot
I installed the NHC software to monitor the cpu temperature. I noticed that the fan was turning on and off when the temperature reached the low 70s. I left the laptop on for several hours with no problems. I left the computer on overnight This morning the computer was off.
I restarted the laptop and noticed that the fan was only running on startup and not running when the temperature was over 70 the cpu temperature was reached over 80 and the computer shutdown after several minutes.
What controls fan is that from the mother board?
