X23- Fixed broken USB port

#1 Post by rdh8 » Thu Aug 21, 2008 7:35 pm

I found some good info here so I thought I would pass some along.

My X23 had one USB port that didn't work.
Putting a volt meter on it measured 5V but under load it was only putting out 1.2V

Knowing most USB port designes use a ferrite bead on the power had me look close to the port on the mother board and there I saw a small brown part that looked just like a ferrite bead.
I measured across both of them(one for each port) under load.
The working port measured 0.05V
The broken port was 3.7V

Without a schematic I do not know if they are ferrite beads but they are not capacitors nor resistors since they measure zero ohm.
So I am 99% sure they are ferrites.
So I replaced it and it works fine.

I happend to have some ferrites of the correct size from some USB projects I was working on.
The part is from Mouser.com
PN 81-BLM21P221SG
Desc: 0805 220ohm SMD EMI Filters/Chip Ferrite Bead

That resistance value is not a DC value like you would read with an ohm meter hence they read zero ohm.

Hope someone finds this useful.

Thank you, I never realized they are ferrite beads.

Just a follow up.
I am transferring files from my old laptop drive to the new SSD drive.
To do this I use a USB->ATA adapter.
Well it never worked without the external power hooked to it. But the adaptor worked fine with my desktop.

With the new ferrite that port can run it w/o the external supply.
Guess I will be changing the other ferrite on the working port because it is not allowing the proper current out the port.
