T42 Recovery Disc needed

#1 Post by rossh » Fri Aug 22, 2008 2:42 am

Hi there, I did a very stupid thing the other day and did a fresh install of XP Pro on my machine due to a virus. The problem is now I can't get certain drivers on machine like the wireless and ethernet ones.

Its a T42, Type 2373, but i don't know the 3 digit code for the last bit.

I have follwed some instructions on another site that told me the order in which you should put the drivers on, but alas this hasn't helped. I tried updating the driver but when asked to specify the place where the driver is I select the folder/drive but the OK button is blocked off, I even put all the drivers on a CD, press OK, CD spins but it says it can't find the driver.

So, does anyone know where I can getv hold of a system restore disc set? I dont really want to go to IBM due to the cost of these disc but I forgot to make one before my comp went a bit crazy.

Cheers for help guys

cheers for that, Have PM'd him. Is this a common problem?

Got a second question. Thinking of getting a bigger disc for my Stinkpad, its got a stock 40gb at present which is too small for me now (i do a lot of photography which just eats space. Is there anything stopping me getting a random 320gb laptop drive?

As long as it is a PATA (IDE) drive you are fine. SATA will not work.
T60 2623-D7U, 3 GB Ram.
Dual boot XP and Linux Mint.

The recovery CDs are generally all the same for a given family (eg T42/p). A second release of the T42/p recovery CDs was issued when the fingerprint reader was added. In addition to the fingerprint reader, some updated driver versions were included along with the SP2 update.

This shouldn't be happening (as you undoubtedly know). The driver install program need to see a driver file or an inf file for the OK box to "un-grey". Sounds like it's not seeing these files for some reason, or they are the wrong files(!) This is where you might need the full model number to make sure you have the right driver for your wireless hardware (although all T4x use the intel pro100 or pro1000 ethernet).

After talking to our computer expert in my department, it may have been because i'm a really stupid person!!!

I was following someones guide on how to install and followed it to the letter. BUT Its either wrong or I missed somthing.

After downloading and opening the exe file i assumed (and we know what that does) that was all i needed to do. It seems that also have to then open the folder that this file unpacked to and click on the setup file (which i didn't realise was there).

So in short, I'm stupid and hopefully i'll have a nice T42 working in 5 mins when i get home!!!

BTW - I have had no trouble restoring a T42 from T40 recovery disks. It takes a lot of patches/updates once you first boot - but you end up in the same place.

Hi Ross and welcome to the forum

The 3 digit code is on the base of the machine. If your sticker has been removed or worn off, you can see the information by pressing F1 when booting to access the bios screen.

Drivers for the T42 can be obtained by googling Thinkpad T42 Drivers - for some reason I can't paste the URL into this message
