Why is the border so big?

#1 Post by generalachoo » Sat Aug 23, 2008 3:17 pm

Why is the border so thick on these T400's and T61 for that matter?

I really hope they shrink the border in the future.

More space for antennas and room for stronger supports and hinges.

Because somebody at Lenovo took backwards design lessons. :)

I would much rather take the looks of the T60, with the thin neat bezel, even if it means that the WWAN antenna (on select models) sticks out on the outside of the laptop. It looks much less obtrusive than the thick asymmetric bezel.

I also don't feel that there was any problem with the hinges in the pre-fat-bezel models.

Uh, well, I'm pretty sure that the thick border/off-center LCD thing has more to do with the LCD rollcage and less to do with antennas. Note that this trend only started on the T61 and up, when the LCD got a dedicated rollcage of its own.

In my mind, it's probably worth the trade-off to have the rollcage. I would love to have an LCD rollcage for my non-WS 15" T60. Alas, to upgrade would mean losing FlexView, and that is a trade-off I'm not ready for yet.

Thinking about it some more - you are probably right that the rollcage is the culprit.

However that can explain the thickness of the bezel (and even then I don't think it's worth it, who in reality had problems with their LCDs even in pre-rollcage laptops?), but that still does not explain why the had to start making it asymmetric (apparently the new X200 Tablet also follows this ridiculous trend).

To me thick bezel is that holds me off from buying T400. It simply looks ugly and disproportional. Reminds me of Pontiac Aztec -- great features, but ugly design.

This is a matter of personal taste. Some people care about it, others don't. There's no convincing here.
