Driver issues? on Xp install

#1 Post by flipteo » Sun Aug 24, 2008 9:35 pm

I just installed xp home on my t42. But I can't get online, and I get no sound when trying to play video. I reckon this has something to do with it:

http://www.mediafire.com/?fde6sj94jmr

Sorry, I couldn't figure out any other way of showing the pic. If you don't trust me, I guess I can just explain it.

In the Device Manager, "Other Devices" has a big yellow question mark next to it, and the following underneath it are the same: "Ethernet Controller", "Multi-media audio controller", "PCI Modem", "Unknown Device", and "Video Controller - VGA compatible". I'm guessing that last one has something to do with why when I scroll on anything, like even a text doc., it's very jerky.

Anyway, I don't understand why this happened or how to fix it. Please help me.

well you have to get the IBM drivers for those devices from the Lenovo website. you may have to get them on another computer that can get online and transport them on a flash drive onto your T42 to install them. Some Thinkpad specific drivers do not come as part of Windows.

Ahh, that's the ticket. After I got the internet going, the wizard was able to take over for the rest. Thanks guys.

Btw, is there a way to disable the trackpad? I always hit it when I use the trackpoint.

if you've got the thinkpad configuration utility: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4ZFRG3 installed, you can do it from xp. requires a restart, i think.

Thanks Sarbin. I wish Linux was a little more polished/user friendly It has it's positives for sure, but for someone like me, the constant fiddling is a drawback. But then again, maybe it's just me.

Yeah sorry, just ranting. I bought this laptop without an OS thinking I'd be satisfied with Linux, but I wasn't, so I've come running back to windows.

does the machine have an xp coa sticker on the bottom? if so, have a look at: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=62169 and consider getting a recovery set. they are real, ibm/lenovo disks, not copies. heck, if i had a t42 set, i'd make and send you a copy.

i have no affiliation to tpcollector other than satisfied customer.

Well, I've got things running pretty smoothly now. Don't see why I would need the recovery sets. I've got access to an OEM xp disc, and I have a COA.

Is there any advantages to having the IBM recovery set?

biggest advantage is a recovery that ends up with no missing drivers/unknown devices. for a t42, a recovery set is less important than for a t43, like i've got, because of the hal that gets installed properly with a recovery set.

if you're happy with an oem install and then dealing with 'unknown devices', then go with it.

I see.

Yeah, I'm pretty easy to please.

What I'd really like is to have a laptop that worked flawlessly with Linux.
