pointer drift is driving me nuts - is there a cure?

#1 Post by Popliteus » Mon Aug 25, 2008 10:06 pm

I have read a few threads about how people's pointers (the red dot device) cause some kind of pointer drift, and it is because the device is recalibrating. Is there a way I can get it to not recalibrate every minute or two? It's driving me absolutely nuts. It will randomly move up to an inch in an unpredictable manner.

And no, using the trackpad is not an acceptable substitute. I used it for a while, and it's far too small for me. Does anyone know how I can shut off this very annoying aspect of my pointer? T61 with vista.

Thanks,

Best advice I can give is to keep your finger(s) completely off the trackpoint when you are not using it. It's very easy to leave a fingertip on the "red dot" while reading the screen, all the while slight pressure is building up in one direction. Then when you lift your finger, the pointer starts taking off while the trackpoint re-calibrates itself.

ok - does anyone know if i can shut off the calibration anyway? I don't really feel like i'm leaving my finger on this thing a lot. It often tries to recalibrate when i'm lining up the pointer to hit the "close window" X, and such. Terrible. Anyone know? Thanks,

Everybody says that yet, oddly enough, once they train themselves not to rest their finger there, the problem goes away.

There isn't any way to turn the calibration off as far as I know, and if you could, it wouldn't work at all.

well given the inability to shut it off, I will monitor myself. Thank you all.
