System Update, Issues

#1 Post by kduniverse » Tue Aug 26, 2008 12:50 pm

I'm having an issue with the hotkey features optional update. It's always on the list to download, and it says I have a more recend version than what's available to update. I got sick of looking at it every time I check, that I tried uninstalling what I had, just to download....yeah, i know.

Anyway, It still shows up, but now my features don't work. Also, I must have done something else, where the onscreen display doesn't show volume, etc. What did I do?!

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

T43p, xp pro

I really hate this system update. I liked the other version they used to use much better.

Software Installer is probably what kduniverse is referring to.

Yes, it was vastly superior to any iteration of System Update that was ever released. Unfortunately, SI -- even if you can find a copy of it -- will no longer install on any ThinkPad, AFAIK. It will report an error during the installation routine, then abort.

Well, SI would install on my ThinkPad, but then it would update to SU. Perhaps, if one could manage to make it not update to SU, one could then enjoy it for longer time :)
I would suggest you to give up updating through SU. SU is very well known for its issues, so I think you´ll be better off with installing updates manually. I believe that´s what most of us do. However, SU may be useful for checking out if any newer updates were released, that´s not always the case, but SU might indicate a new update and so a look on Lenovo website worth ;)
To your particular issue: download the onscreen display driver from Lenovo website and install it manually. If you still experience the same problem, you probably need the Lenovo System Interface driver. You can find it on Lenovo website as well.

Cheers

si installs fine on my machines (t22, a31p, 2x t43). none of my machines have *ever* seen su. maybe if one were to uninstall su, if that's possible, si would install successfully?

I may very well try your suggestion, sarbin. I'd decided to simply visit the Lenovo downloads site once a week and manually download any new update, which a lot of users already do.

If I decide to remove SU3 and reinstall SI, I'll report back.

what version of si do you have available?

side note... when using si, i uncheck the box to let si go online to look for updates. i've heard that piece doesn't work since release of su. something about it being pointed at servers that don't respond anymore. i dl packages manually and just use si to manage the installs/updates. works perfectly for me.

Well this thread went a little off topic...

Anyway, I did a restore and now have my on screen functions back. My problem now is the same things keep showing up in System Update.

I have looked on Lenovo's site and didn't find the Software Installer that easily. Also they say it's no longer available. How are some of you still using it? Are the updates still showing as if it were available?

when you say you restored, was that a full system recovery to factory state? if so, you should have had software installer. if you then went to the ibm/lenovo driver site and installed system update, i believe it uninstalls software installer. like i said, i've never installed system update and don't plan to.

you are correct that si is no longer easily available. but i'm a packrat. i've got just about every driver package from ibm/lenovo that i've ever installed on my machines, archived safely away. that includes a number of si versions.

if your machine was initially installed with the ibm/lenovo image, rather than a retail xp install, look here: C:\IBMTOOLS\drivers\PKGMGR for SETUP.EXE. on my t43, that installs si v3.12.0506, which i've updated to v4x. installing su *may* remove the si installer, though.
