Converting Kodak PhotoCD

#1 Post by tpribors » Tue Aug 26, 2008 2:23 pm

The PhotoCD was the best film transfer ever. It had multiple resolutions encoded in such a way that they got all of them on one CD with up to something like 100 frames per CD.

The format is ultra proprietary. Photoshop has dropped support in Elements although I have gone to V4 and pulled the plugins. Problem is that the Photoshop plugins have a highlight processing problem that flattens the color, sometimes pretty badly.

Does anyone know of a bulk converter that will extract a "resolution of choice" convert to JPEG or TIFF?

I recall there is a free batch conversion program that handles "convert from x to y" but I can't remember what it was or if it would take PhotoCD. Suggestions?

It turns out that with the Photoshop converter I can get all images converted to highest resolution TIFF and get them on one dual layer DVD. I'm trying to convert my collection, but now I think I want to go back and get a better conversion.

I use Paint Shop Pro (PSP) Version 7 and it appears to have support for Kodak Photo CD files (.PCD). There is also a batch converter that will take one format and convert them into another, with appropriate options for the output file types (.JPG and .TIF compression settings). I believe that some of the earlier versions of PSP may also handle .PCD files.

I think that after version 5, PSP became a retail product. Previous to that, it was shareware. Here's a site where you can download various versions:

I just checked a Win98 system I have and PSP 3.11 has support for .PCD files and a batch converter that outputs both .JPG and .TIF.
