Battery?

#1 Post by new_user » Tue Aug 26, 2008 3:46 pm

Finally got my battery. r40e. Does it really matter if I tun off the computer before inserting the battery? Or is there any harm removing or inserting the battery while my r40e is on?

not sure how good it is to flip the pc upside down while it's running, though. i wouldn't do it on mine. i suspend first.

I Agee.. :thumbs-UP:

A new Battery is my next and hopefully last piece to my reborn puzzle (R40), I've tried reconditioning it over and over but it won't hold a full charge, sometimes it goes from 100% to 90% then right to 4% and shut down and other times it will run from 100%down to 60% then jump down to 3% or4% and shut down.

@new_user...
my 'cycles' question was directed at pt1209 considering the battery strangeness reported. but the following applies to your installation also.

assuming you have winxp installed, do you have: Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management features for Windows - ThinkPad General installed?
and, again assuming winxp: Configuration utility for Windows 95, 98, 98SE, Me, 2000, XP - ThinkPad also?[/url]

there is a Power Management menu item in the ThinkPad Configuration Utility that has a Battery Information sub menu item which will provide the info you seek.

do you see a Power Management menu item in the ThinkPad Configuration Utility that has a Battery Information sub menu item? if so, select it. if not, then install the other package i linked for you.

I installed the other thing also. Not I got the options. But under Battery Information and Status Detail it says cycle count ZERO. But I got 2 hours on a full charge. It is brand new.

cycle count = zero is what a brand new battery should show. :)
as you use the machine on battery power and then recharge, the cycle counter should increase.

depends on how gentle you are with the battery. it could be dead at 100 or last to 500 cycles. a forum search might shed some light, if not the experience of other forum members.

cheers.

Hey sarbin,
Cycle count is at 230, strange thing is Battery health comes in at "Good Condition" with a Green Box.. Which even though it's the original battery I'm still getting at "good condition" reading, that's why I keep letting run down and recharge but it's not getting any better. Is 230 a low count??

it's getting up there, but it all depends on how the battery has been treated.

i've got a red-zone a31p battery with 122 cycles, but it sits on a dock 99% of the time. that forces the battery to stay topped up because battery charging thresholds aren't supported. on my 'new-to-me' t43 with it's brand new battery, i'm using battery thresholds to not engage charging until the battery is down to 40% or so, regardless of docked state.

it can all be a bit confusing as there is conflicting info about best practices.

I know, for almost two years it was plugged in charging 24/7 then sat unplugged for a year, that's why I keep trying to recondition it, I figured that's one heck of a battery memory to try and reverse, the "good condition' reading from the Battery info leads me to believe it might be possible. Do you think it's futile?? How many cycles does a new or truly "good" battery have?

new batteries should have zero cycles.

a 9-cell i had sent from lenovo as part of the recall, had a 40% charge level, which i believe is the long term storage level recommendation, and zero cycles. it had a design and full-charge capacity of 77.76Wh. it now has 8 cycles and no reduction in full-charge capacity. this battery is always installed in the machine and the machine is docked 98% of the time and under ac power. i've got the thresholds set to 40 and 80% as an experiment to see how long i can keep this battery alive. it yields about 2.5-3 hours running down from 80 to 40% and ~4 hours from 100 down to 40%.

sarbin are you running at high performance or high battery performance with these numbers? I definitely have to get a new battery, I'm lucky to get 20-30 minutes out of my battery...

just remember, this is a 9-cell battery.

Nice price, unfortunately it's not a genuine IBM Battery and not really sure it matters but I've heard some stories about non genuine batteries which scared me away from them.... This is the one I picked up..
