#1 Post by SaberX » Tue Aug 26, 2008 5:29 pm

ACER ASPIRE ONE ULTRA PORTABLE .
What do prople think of thease?
The ones with the 120 or 160gig hard drive.

I have the A31P for home but i'm looking at getting a small laptop.
I'll be tradeing or selling the T41 i have.

I don't hold anything labeled (or produced by) Acer in any type of regard.

Longevity isn't their strong suite, and re-sell value is non-existent.

Plenty of nice small machines around, just make up your mind on how big/fast/cheap you want it.

I had a 'close' look (and by close, I have to admit I mean for about 10 seconds) at one today and I don't really see anything mega appealing in them. The touchpad buttons are alongside the vertical sides of the touchpad, which would take getting used to, and there was nothing in it to convince me that it would be any better than a similarly priced used X series TP or similar machine.

Thanks.

I also think a nice X system is the way to go.
I just have to figger out what X system i want to go with. And how much i want to spend on one....
I like the X3x system's but like to get something newer/faster.
The X4x system's are newer but can be slower then a nice X3x.
That just leaves the X6x system's.
I'll have to see what they sell for and how much cahs i can come up with....

An X32 would be ideal IMO. I have an X40 coming from George as part of a trade, which I'm looking forward to trying out but think it may be slightly lacking compared to the X31 I had last year. No idea what a typical X60 costs but I'd also buy one to try out if the price was right.

There's some info about the 120GB model in the following thread, plus a size comparo with the X61s and 14" T43:

I ALMOST bought an aspire one this week (a final confirm click away), but been a bit put off by the very short standard battery life.

Thought It would be enough to lug to class for quick notes and drafts and some surfing.

After an eBay reality check, I ended up ordering a nice X31 for about the same price. Will be my first Thinkpad in years, which is great. (Previously had (and loved) 380ED, 390X, 600, A22m and briefly a pair of T41s from work(those were awesome!)).

I remember lusting badly for those X3x when they were new (basically unobtainium at over 4 grand CDN).

It will be over a pound heavier than the AA1, but the keyboard alone (let alone battery life when I get a new one) will easily make up for it.

A question that's hovering in my mind since I first saw the original EEE PC, is why isn't anybody making a netbook that would take standard AA rechargeables (say 6 of them for about 8.5V-9V) ?

Same with me last week.
I had the 120gig , XP one in my hands on the way up to the checkout at Future shop.Waited at the line up at the check out for about 5 ~6 min's and i just had one of those gut feelings that i should hold off and save up for a nice X60 or X61.
I figger in about 2 maybe 3 weeks i'll have enough cash to get a nice X60.
So i said i could get this Acer One now OR wait 3 weeks and have a nice X60 or X61(maybe even a brand new one).
So i put it back and just waiting now...

I have both an X61s and the 8gb SSD aspire one ($1600 vs $329 retail)

While i'm quite spoiled by the thinkpads keyboard, battery, and trackpoint, I find myself using the netbook quite a bit more. Even put XP on the 8gb ssd to get full functionality out of the system.

I do however, still hold out hope lenovo is working on a thinkpad branded 10" netbook with the whole magnesium case/trackpoint setup and thin bezel.

Lenovo already has Ideapad S series as their netbook line. I doubt that there will be ThinkPad netbook line.

IBM ThinkPad R51e
IBM ThinkPad X22

Yeah but the S10 is hardly what i'd call ideal vs all the competition.

A thinkpad though, they can charge a premium for and still do well.

at some point it goes a little bit against the 'netbook' idea, but as long as the cost is less than 800(ish).....
