Help Restore an old 760xl Laptop to original

#1 Post by stephen » Wed Aug 27, 2008 5:36 am

I bought an Old Thinkpad 760XL last week and need to restore it. The previous owner tried to install Linux and FAILED but did manage to wipe out the entire system. It will only Boot from a Windows 98SE Floppy but won't do anything else.
Are any Disc's available to do a complete restore. I have Windows 98SE but it won't boot.
Tried Lenovo website but can't make any sence out of it.

Please Help
Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

It sounds as if the Hard Disk needs to partitioned and formatted first for use with Windows.
The Linux format it is in now, is not recognized.
Any bootfloppy from W98 or W98SE with the FDISK and FORMAT programs on it could do that.
After partitioning/formatting you can install Windows.
1) boot from floppy till you get the A:\> prompt
2) type in FDISK and hit enter. Follow instructions.
3) type in FORMAT C: /S and hit enter.
4) when done, install Windows.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
