T40 CPU Upgrade question
T40 CPU Upgrade question
Knows somebody if I can upgrade my T40 with this processor Intel Pentium 1.7 GHz SL7EP ?
Thank's
Thank's
A T40 will take any 400 MT/s front side bus standard voltage Pentium M Banias or Dothan CPU. See this list. Stay away from the 'A model CPU's... Pentium M 735A, etc.
You can upgrade the processor but, unless you're going from a 1.3, it's probably not worth it from a performance standpoint. You'd do better upgrading the RAM and/or hard disk

@ loukilouk:
I agree with you that you probably get "most bang for the buck" (= most value for your money!) if upgrading to a PM735 (1.7 GHz Dothan, SL7EP), as they can be found from only around $15 - whereas its closest bigger/faster brother, the 1.8 GHz PM745 (e.g. SL7EN) most likely will cost you $50 or even above. There are many user-reports on this forum about the actual speed increase when upgrading a T40 Banais to a Dothan - see e.g. the following threads Upgrade Questions (the post of Fri May 30, 2008 4:51 pm) and T42 Dothan Upgrade.
PS: A very useful hint is mentioned in the thread T42 1.7 processor on a T41 (the post of Sun Mar 09, 2008 3:56 pm)...

Knowing it would only run at the T40's 400mhz bus speed, can a 533bus chip be used? I have seen Intel 750's (1.86ghz/533, SL7S9) chips on ebay for cheap (abt $20) and wonder if the increased clock speed even with slower bus would be worth spending the $20..
1.7g 735's(SL7EP) are running abt $35-$50, 1.8g 745's (SL7EN) are closer to $75-$90.. and 2.0g 755's (SL7EM) are $140-$150.. similar clock speed 533mhz chips run abt $15-$30 less but would they be too hamstrung but the 400mhz bus to run decently, or at all?
Inquiring minds want to know

No, it does not work that way. The 400/533 bus is actually a quad 100/133 bus. Then the cpu has a hardcoded multiplier value that it uses on the bus speed to get its own speed. So a 1.7ghz/400 chip has a 17x multiplier, and the 1,73ghz/533 chip has a 13x multiplier. So if you were to stick the 1.73ghz/1.86ghz chip in, you would end up with a paltry 13x100=1.3ghz or 14x100=1.4ghz. Of course, on top of that you have to deal with the bios not recognizing those chips and locking them at 600mhz...skygodtj wrote:Knowing it would only run at the T40's 400mhz bus speed, can a 533bus chip be used? oops, my bad, forgot abt the 1.21 jiggawatt multiplier circuit
The T40 has a 1.5gig chip now, and bios prob wouldnt recognize the 750 either.. thanx

1.6 Banias to 2.0 Dothan, T40
I'm going to upgrade my T40's 1.6 Banias CPU to a 2.0 Dothan. While I'm scrubbing for the surgery, would anyone who has done the upgrade like to comment on the upgrade process?
Would anyone like to comment on the difference in performance that I will see? The RAM is already at 2 GB.

Re: 1.6 Banias to 2.0 Dothan, T40
There are a number of threads discussing this - see e.g. Upgrade to Dothan on T40p and Upgrade T40 Banias 1.5G to Dothan 2 or 2.1G? and FS Dothan 2.0GHz 400MB fsb (755) Edited and T40 upgrade from 1.5 to 2.0 and FS: 2Ghz Pentium M 755 Dothan Core.cogitordi wrote:I'm going to upgrade my T40's 1.6 Banias CPU to a 2.0 Dothan. Operation successful, except that I popped off one of the red Ultra Nav keys and now it won't stay on.cogitordi wrote:I'm going to upgrade my T40's 1.6 Banias CPU to a 2.0 Dothan.
Anyone know how to stick one of these keys back on? Do I just press very hard?

Make sure you don't break those little plastic tabs off the bottom... I have a feeling they broke already and that's why it won't go back on.cogitordi wrote:Operation successful, except that I popped off one of the red Ultra Nav keys and now it won't stay on.cogitordi wrote:I'm going to upgrade my T40's 1.6 Banias CPU to a 2.0 Dothan.

The tabs seem to be intact. Do you know how this key is held in position? Is it a friction fit only?aaa wrote: Make sure you don't break those little plastic tabs off the bottom... I have a feeling they broke already and that's why it won't go back on.
