Replacement keyboards - shipped with screws?

#1 Post by Edward Mendelson » Thu Aug 28, 2008 12:14 pm

IBM used to ship screws with its replacement keyboards for the T42. I just bought a T61 keyboard on eBay, described as "new" by the seller, but there weren't any screws in the box Has Lenovo stopped shipping screws along with keyboards, or did I get, um, screwed on the screws?

I've received several replacement keyboards in the past year -- all sans screws.

Interesting that the HMM states that screws should only be used once. So they SHOULD be shipping them with screws.

the last keyboard i bought on ebay, new also, came in the ibm/lenovo box and had the 3 appropriate screws in it. i didn't see them at first, but found them after pulling out all the padding as i was breaking down the box to discard.

You're right about the disconnect between the HMM and the replacements.

I've got a box of T42 screws in a closet somewhere - will check if they're the same as the T61 screws (probably they aren't, unfortunately).

T42 keyboard screws are much shorter (10mm) than T61 (14mm). By the way, the longer screws for the T4x touchpads are 14mm with a slightly different head, but it should work. I'm out-of-town for some time and I have no screws here

But, according to your signature, you're talking about a T4x keyboard (3 screws), not a T6x keyboard (5 screws), right? If so, that confirms my first post: T4x keyboards shipped with screws; T6x seem not to.

Or did I misunderstand what you were saying?

i should have been clear that i was replying generically.

In my case, I've received replacements for T60p and T61 keyboards. All shipped without screws.

That seems to settle the question:

T4x keyboards ship with screws.
T6x keyboards ship without screws.

Thanks, all!

Ed,

There is only one screw for the T6x keyboard. There are a few for the palmrest but they do not attach to the keyboard.

The T6x keyboards don't include the one screw. The T4x 14" comes with four screws and the T4x 15" comes with three screws.

So, no, you were not screwed.

Two things:
1. My T61p has no keyboard screws. Undo the palm rest, remove it, and then the keyboard comes out.
2. Any replacement keyboard from a vendor source (repair) has never come with screws. It may be different in different countires.

I think the question here is this: you have to remove keys to replace the keyboard (whether or not the keyboard is actually attached by screws). The HMM says you should use the screws only once. Therefore it would be nice if Lenovo shipped new screws with a new T6x keyboard, because otherwise you have to find new screws separately if you want to follow the HMM's instructions and not reuse the existing screws.

Every replacement T42 keyboard I ever received (either direct from IBM or by purchase of a new box) came with replacement screws. (This was in the US.)

I got a new keyboard for my T42 just before the warranty ran out. I stripped the head on one of the screws taking it apart that I didn't want to try to reuse it. No screws with the keyboard but they sent me a bag of screws - it looked like every screw in the machine. In fact they sent me two bags...
