T43 HDD upgrade options

#1 Post by YaleBoy » Fri Aug 29, 2008 9:26 am

Hi everyone in this family :) . I have a T43(2668) and I like it a lot. The only thing that bothers me now is the limited 60G HDD. I want to do a upgrade and have studied carefully in the forum before this post. It seems to me that there are the following options available

1) Find a Fujitsu 120G PATA (MHV2120AH, the largest non-2010 drive) and replace the old 60G HDD directly. However, the 120G capacity seems not to be a great improvement and I'm not very confident in the performance/price ratio of this drive...

2) Find a WD 250G PATA (WD2500BEVE) intead and igore the 2010 warning each time when booting. I am wondering whether the warning will be like a alarm clock and beep continuously or only ring once. Will the volume be so loud to be heard from several desks away :( ? Will the warning occur even after waking up from hibernation and suspension? Also, I have heard some horrible stories about this drive...

3) Find a ultrabay HDD adapter and replace the DVD drive. This option seems to be very flexible and I can buy any of the available notebook drives (PATA or SATA) in stock. But for this option, I also have several concerns. Will it be recognized in the BIOS as a second HDD and perform as well as the internal one? I would not like to get a HDD performed just like another external USB drive.

I saw this non-lenovo adapter on ebay (the main reason is its price). It seems that I can plug any SATA drive into it and let it work with my T43. Do I miss anything here?

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance![/url]

Fujitsu does have a 160GB version

Some members had reported slow performance using the Ultrabay tray as primary drive.

PATA production is being ramp down everywhere so do your upgrade quick.

Thanks, buddy. Finally I decided to go to the ultraslim option so that I can play ubuntu on the 2nd HDD.

The warning is both visual (warning screen) and aural (two beeps).

I'm not sure, but I think it may depend on how loud your volume is set. If you mute the volume before shutting down your computer or putting it in hibernation, you'll get the warning screen but no beeps when you restart.

Yes for hibernation. I don't know about suspension, as I never use it
