Password Protect HDD?

#1 Post by jronald » Sat Aug 30, 2008 4:42 pm

How does a password protected HDD act once it has been removed from the "home" machine?

I picked up a couple of bare HDDs from a wrecker/salvager of IBM and Compaq machines. The original machines were long since gone, I suspect they were from IBMs because that was mainly what was being split at the time.

Both will format, but neither will show in in the explore window. They act normal while formatting, sound normal when running, but trying to find them once running is impossible.

I have one here, and wherever it goes, it brings either a padlock symbol or a similar notice that the HD is locked.
You can't even partition or format it.
So if your HDs can be formatted, they are not PW protected.
In Disk Management try rightclicking the word Disk0, Disk1 or Disk2 etc. to Initialize the HD first.

All I get when right clicking is "Properties and Help"

Try a program like Partition Magic or Ranish
