hard drive limitation for R32?

#1 Post by lparsons » Mon Sep 01, 2008 4:35 pm

I don't recall seeing an answer for this one before, so I'll try it again. Does anyone know what the largest hard drive is that would work in an R32? I am currently running an 80gb, and looking at 250gb. Any reason why they might not work?

On a side note, I almost can't believe how cheap storage is now, even for notebook drives. I'm looking at a 250gb notebook drive for under $100 - the first drive I bought brand new was 130mb, for $220. I'm getting about 1,500x the storage for less than half the price...

From what I recall, people have struck the wall at 137GB with R32 and R40e...and it was a BIOS wall, not the one that upgrades available in XP SP2 resolve...

I'm working off of memory here, and I might be wrong, but...you may want to do a little more research...

Good luck.

I've poked around a little bit to see what I can find other people saying about larger hard drives on an R32.

I have seen at least one ebay ad (from Malaysia, FWIW) for a 250gb drive that they claim will work with an R32. I've also seen a few online vendors selling 250gb drives with the same claim.

Some vendors even have specific lists of model numbers (on which my model number does appear) that they use to list compatibility. I wish I knew where the list came from and what criteria was used to generate it.

I suppose if I order from a reputable company, I should be able to return the drive if it doesn't work. I'll post my results here once I get around to it. Considering how dirt cheap the 2.5" PATA drives are now - and the fact that they seem to be getting gradually phased out - I might have to do it sooner than later.

I had issues putting a 160gb drive inside my R30, the drive just would *NOT* get detected at boot, although fedora live and other boot cd's detected it just fine once i had booted of the cd. As soon as i played swapsies with the 120gb from my portable drive caddy things worked perfectly. so yeah, bios limitation is a distinct possibility for yours too.

ah man, id crack open the drive bay and tell you it, but honestly my desktop has turned into a pile of crap (think i fried motherboard when upgrading ram) and i reallly cant afford to lose my lappy right now, i will edit this post after christmas with the exact drive model on the lablel when i get a new mobo.
windows is reporting the drive as WDC WD1600BEVE-00UYT0 id translate that as a 2.5 IDE western digital 160gb hard drive.

my r32 is 2658-BPU
