Google Chrome

#1 Post by spt60 » Tue Sep 02, 2008 6:59 pm

Current version: 0.2.149.30
Yupe. It's official.
Comic's here: http://www.google.com/googlebooks/chrome/
Download here: http://www.google.com/chrome

My 2cents:
- It's FAST.
- Simple to use.
- A little big on memory usage but i can tolerate this.
- The multiprocesses idea for browsing is very interesting.
- Love it.

I'll keep Firefox cuz' its extensions/add-ons ability rules.
I'll keep IE for Windows/MS Update.

Firefox is still my current default browser.

---Security test---
I ran this: http://bcheck.scanit.be/bcheck/index.php
It identified Google Chrome as Safari browser, I guess because of its Webkit root.
Ran all available tests of all browsers and it passed all of them. I guess this is a good thing...so far.

I tried it. It's OK. Very fast. I don't like how bookmarks are handled, though. I want them organized in a list.

Seems pretty good so far...the fact that the tabs are up in the title bar, thus giving slightly more viewing area, is something I like. I wouldn't say that it'll become my default browser, but it seems a good alternative.

Did anybody actually read the EULA? :) . <Ray> <--- Wondering what Google is gathering data on....

edit: Bookmarks, by default, go onto the bookmark bar but can be directed into a folder. You can grab a tab and pull it off into a separate browser window. CTRL-T (new tab) and CTRL-W (close current tab) commands work the same as in FireFox. Not too bad... I'm testing it out on a newly arrived A22p with 384MB.

So far the one thing that doesn't seem to work in Chrome is the "Today on AOL" news page at webmail.aol.com. The area where the news stories is displayed is blank. Mailbox functions appear to be working fine.

I didn't read it. I figure they already know everything there is to know about me since I use Gmail for my e-mail and Google as my default search engine.

^^^ :)

There's seven process of Chrome running on my system, with 5 tabs open. Total memory is about 110MB, which is about the same as what Firefox 2 takes up.

I know there was the option of sending data to Google re. crashes and the like, in the tradition of other beta releases...maybe it's this that the EULA (which I didn't read either) refers to?

I tested it with a flash game that runs smoothly in FF, it froze, completely unresponsive.

The only part I like about chrome is that if one tab crashes, I can just kill it from task manager and have the other tabs still on. It will take a LOT to part me from Opera.

I got so tired of trying different browser (usually within a Linux machine) that I just yawn now at yet another browser. Windows Internet Explorer does everything I need done and does not leave me wanting, so I just stick with it. YMMV. ... JDH

i scanned thru the eula and it reads like chrome will get 'push' updates similar to google desktop search. i never liked the idea of unsolicited updates in any application, so i'm not likely to try it. but i will be following the discussion closely.

Seriously, did the world really need another web browser? I'm all for competition and innovation... but the big three (FF, Safari, IE) are all pretty darn good right now... now something like Aurora is a whole different story, something new and innovative.

except for speed there isn't much that this browser can offer. i already got used to the classic organization of menus on IE6/FF. google didn't give me a good reason to switch. good try thou.

It really needs support for middle-click scrolling... its too much a part of how I browse.

edit: standard scrolling works, smooth doesn't, but with standard scroll I can't middle-click on links to open in a new tab

Hi Purcy, yes I tried and it worked greatly too. However I try to limit as much as possible the number of add-ons I use in Firefox. I currently use only Adblock Plus, NoScript and TinyMenu.

Try again. It uses Webkit, just like Safari and Konqueror.

I installed it on my T42. It loads instantly, runs reliably. It's basic and simple and I just found a flaw with word wrapping while typing this. However, I haven't found anything significant to make me not like this browser.

Don't forget to inspect your machine by Task Manager or better Process Explorer tool. You might find that "a spyware" is installed and running without a notice and can install a software on your machine anytime. Don't bother to open Add/Remove Programs dialog, it is not there :-)

My guess it that the point of this software is not to deliver a web browser. It is about to deliver webkit core on your machine. Have you installed Adobe Reader 9 recently ? If so, you might notice that there is another application installed as well. Next please ... Silverlight. The battle has begun :D

I tried Google Chrome, seemed faster than Firefox, but it was too simple and too basic.

I still keep Firefox as my default browser.

Has anyone tried running this new browser on Vista X64? Reason I ask is because for the life of me I cant get it to install on an X64 copy of Vista on either my work or my home laptops.

Does anyone know if this edition of Windows is blocked or simply not supported? The installer files are double clicked, they cause the Vista "working" icon to show on the mouse, and then simply just stop doing anything.

Perhaps my antivirus NOD32 is blocking it? Or my ad-blocking program Ad Muncher?
