T30 heating up with Ubuntu 8.04 Installed

#1 Post by thinkxplx » Tue Sep 02, 2008 11:15 pm

I replaced hard disk on my T30.(The old hdd had xp prof on it). To trouble shoot my wireless router, I accidently restarted the machine with the router cable plugged in while the boot sequence was set to boot from external devices (usb) . That was it. The trouble-free xp wouldnt reeboot in any mode. ( problem with agp drivers.). I finally gave up and bought a new hdd and installed Ubuntu hardy heron (8.04). Everything is fine except the machine gets *very* hot.

I was wondering if anyone has faced this issue. I am concerned that my laptop will get roasted. Any suggestions on what I should do to get the temp down to manageable levels.. I had no issues whatsoever with xp installed.

TIA

Output of sensors command,I am not sure what they mean, but thought I will mention it anyway..

You sure it's not the new HD (or Ubuntu) causing all that heat?

Have a look at this: http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy ... sensors.29

RealBlackStuff:

I am not sure if its the os or the hdd. I read a post on another forum where a T30
user had similar problem. (the discussion didnt produce any solution)

I will check the link you provided. Thanks

If those temps are the highest you get, you have nothing to worry about.
Only if/when they shoot up to 80oC and higher should you worry.

I don't thin that the T30's were known for running cool anyway. Most of them ran hot in windows too.

I've ran 8.04 on a couple of T30's.

Try gkrellm (via synaptic), great for all sorts including monitoring the CPU temp and fan activity.

On mine, the CPU fan comes on when the CPU temp reaches around 55c.
The temp can reach 70c, but quickly reduce to 45c when the fan kicks in.

I'm typing this on another T30 running 7.10 and current CPU temp maxed at 55c.

As has been said many times, a clean CPU fan and fresh heatsink compound helps a lot.

Looking at your temps, I agree no probs there.

what about setting up the cpu frequency to manual, Ive found by setting it to the lowest speed helps with temps

yes, and it works like s*** :D
best is to set to some "adaptive" speed - mine is set to work at 1.2Ghz, and when needed to step up to 2.0
the speed change is sufficiently fast in order not to cause any "glitches" in operation

and idle in this case is around 45C
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T
