Thinkpad T42p - Runs hot. Fan on, seems slow.

#1 Post by jaw174 » Wed Sep 03, 2008 10:32 am

Hello,

I love the t4x series of notebooks -
i ran across a t42p with a damaged LCD, and had a t41 that was havving issues with the sound card, so i swapped the LCD onto it.

Now that i am actual using the notebook regularly, it seems to run very hot, the fan is always on, and i have noticed that it is not fast at all.

this unit is a 2.0 Ghz p4 mobile, with 2 Gb of ram.
i swapped the ahrd drove from my t41 which is a 1.6 ghz, same ram- it runs things just fine.

So- is there a firmware upgrade or did i just end up with a lemon of a t42?

Thanks

Maybe dust is clogging up the fan. Use the tpfancontrol app to check temperatures and fan speed (post it here).

Might also be a graphics driver issue, if you haven't replaced that with the right one already.

Your T42P is actually a Pentium M, not a P4 M, so it should run pretty cool. My T42P (1.8ghz) is on all day M-F. Right now, its at 43 C and the fan is running. I can hear it, but its not disruptive. You might want to download Mobile Meter and see if your computer is actually running hot or if the fan just kicks in at a low temperature.

Welcome to the forum, jaw174!

I agree with the above posters - your T42p should not run slow and also not particularly hot, at idle! If however the CPU-speed has perhaps been configured to "very slow" (always!), then this will of course have an impact - but check your power settings (just left-click on the battery-indicator in the taskbar).

I suggest you have a look in the thread T43 operating temperature (see the post there of Wed Mar 05, 2008 10:06 pm), and consider following the suggestions there - that will both make your T42p cooler and improve the battery-time!

For your information, my T42p (see signature) has the CPU idling around the low 40'ties (deg. C) and the GPU idling around 46 deg. C. Both values are obtained by undervolting the CPU and downclocking the GPU - see the thread above!

What does the above mean? That you perhaps use a slow 4200 rpm HDD from "an old" T41? Also, are you saying that the amount of RAM is the same in the T42p as in the T41? If so, how much is that - and do you run Windows XP Professional w/Service Pack 2 on both ThinkPad's - or what?
