Does it boot from a CD?

If you put pressure on the keyboard around the GPU area which is by the V or B while attempting to boot does your T40 work normally? If so then I am afraid you have personally discovered the dreaded loose GPU syndrome. This issue is widely discussed here on this forum. The only solution is removing the motherboard and having the GPU resoldered so it is no longer loose or of course total motherboard replacement.

If the screen's already showing the IBM logo then it's unlikely to be the graphics chip problem.
The gfx problem is usually shown by having a dead screen.

It can be quite a few other things.

Start up - pressing F2, does it go into the bios screen?

Start up - pressing F12, does it go into the boot devise menu. and can you then select the HDD and then boot from it?

Make sure your memory sticks are both properly inserted.

Check the HDD is properly fitted and has not come loose.

As HarryC says, does it boot from a CD?

Does it pass all the PC Doctor tests?

I took it out of the dock I always have it in and booted it off of the battery. It started right up??

I shut the dock off, put it back in the dock, turned the dock on and it runs fine now. Hummm. Not sure what that was. I hadn't run it in a week or so.

Before I turned it on via battery only, I left it in the dock, off, but with the power on to charge up the battery. I left it that way for about 90 minutes. Not sure what that was all about??

Thanks for the notes. we'll see what shakes out from here.

Well, I unloaded a bunch of software from the ThinkPad. Restarted and again received the IBM THinkpad screen only without any movement. TP was in the dock. I did the same thing I did before, removed it from the dock, started it off of the battery and it was fine. Popped it back in the dock and it runs well. I can tell because it is running off of an external monitor which is where the IBM ThinkPad screen came from. I wonder if there is a defect in the dock??
