.b vs .g file transfer speeds thru network

#1 Post by Blake » Sat Jan 01, 2005 1:09 pm

here is my setup.

x31 with .b

buffalo .g router and .g wireless card in my tower.

basically i just sent about 105mb from the x31 to the tower (aka storage center) and it took about 8 or 9 min for 100 mb..

if i were to upgrade to the .g in the x31 will i see a dirmatic preformance?

also if they were both hard wired, and both have gb lan ( they both do) will that be an extremely noticeable difference?

thanks
Blake~

Wired is much faster than wireless on a LAN segment. Wireless is busy with packet security and other things, where wired is not. If I have to move a large set of files, I disconnect the wireless and connect an ethernet cable. ... JD Hurst

I upgraded b to g... throughput almost doubled..... still nowhere near 10/100....

Yeah, I did a test a while ago, and my G performance was 2.25x of the B perormance. As noted here, it is still faster to do WIRED lan for large transfers, backups etc. But, on a normal basis, moving 50MB excel files around and 250MB video files, or bigger, it is nice to have that throughput.

I am waiting for a nice home solution for wired, faster than HPNA, but haven't found an easy option yet.
