Where to buy kapton tape?

#1 Post by sparta.rising » Sun Sep 07, 2008 5:57 pm

Does anyone know a brick and mortar store in the US that carries Kapton tape? Or a similar product?

May I ask why you need it? For a moment, I thought I had logged into the Digitrax forum by mistake. Wherever Kaptop tape is specified, I just use good quality electrical tape. What does Kapton tape do over and above good electrical tape? Thank you, ... JDH

Kapton has excellent thermal conductivity and as well makes a great insulator ... as far as i kno, except mica, this is the only material with such properties.

I've seen it used with motherboard work and mods, I just thought it would be useful to have handy.

I have a couple of rolls of it. I use it on Macbooks and Macbook Pros. They use a ton of it inside those machines. As Gator mentioned, I always thought Apple used it for it's thermal conductivity properties.

Thanks indeed. Digitrax specifies Kapton tape for decoder installs where insulation is the key quality, and thermal conductivity is irrelevant. That is why (for decoder installs in locomotives) I can get away with good old-fashioned electrical tape (Just like Red Green :) ).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapton

Interesting note: "According to a NASA internal report, Space Shuttle "wires were coated with an insulator known as Kapton that tended to break down over time, causing short circuits and, potentially, fires."

edit: I should say that the breakdown is caused by physical or mechanical wear. I'm assuming that if used in a stationary application, the tape won't spontaneously dissolve :) .

I had a bit of Kapton tape supplied with a decoder, and just handling it in my fingers caused it to be damaged. That is the primary reason why I used vinyl electrical tape instead. ... JDH

Harryc,
So, if you have several rolls of it, where did you but it?
