R51 wireless disabled in BIOS?

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Sun Sep 07, 2008 10:17 pm

In this R51, something funny is going on.

Product: ThinkPad R51 1831-DU2 [change]
Operating system: All [change]

Original description: Based on 1830-BQU: P M 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM, 60GB HDD, 15in 1400x1050 LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 9000, 24x24x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD, Intel PRO 802.11bg wireless-Disabled in BIOS(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, IEEE 1394, 6c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro

Why would they disable wireless, and can this be UNdone with a BIOS setting or a BIOS update?

There's this: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=3281

and confirmed in here: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... uj37us.txt

Seems to be a toggleable (sp?) function in BIOS. I've never had an R51 so I can't say, but my T41 does have this setting under the Config menu.

I can enable/disable internal WiFi in BIOS (R51 1829-L7G). I use that when did system reinstall to prevent turning on the card with non-updated (read vulnerable) drivers.
