Z61m Titanium Lid wearing out

#1 Post by circuslife » Mon Sep 08, 2008 1:51 am

Hi everyone!

I'm a very proud owner of the Z61m with the Titanium Lid. I bought it only recently so I'm not yet having any problems with the casing, as opposed to other Z61m owners.

The other day, while browsing the web for potential unit problems, I read that some people are experiencing wearing or chaffing on the coating of their Z61m's titanium lid. Apparently, there's a thin coating of plastic or rubber on the unit that wears out after some time. Based on the pictures they have shown, the lid may become less than attractive when this happens. This makes me really worried about my unit.

I'm wondering if other Z61m owners in this forum have experienced this and if so, how they were able to get around it, prevent it from happening or fix the issue.

Any Z-series with titanium lid owners out there?

Thanks much!

Don't worry about it. That machine also comes with a standard Thinkpad gray lid. Replace it with that one if it becomes ugly. You could also try a 'skin' on the lid to protect what's there.

Man, I came soo close to getting a z61t with a Ti lid for soo long. I figured the Ti lid would wear better, not worse. Why they coated it like that, I have no idea.

Gray? There's a color other than black or the titanium? (Didn't know that)

The coating aside, isn't the titanium still wearing better? It is titanium after all. ;)

I think he was referring to the typical black lid. :)

What wears is the clear coating on top of the metal itself. I don't understand why Lenovo chose this weak coating as Titanium doesn't seem to hold it well. :(

Well, this is really what I didn't understand. Did the normal lids really "wear"? The only "issue" i've ever seen with them wasn't the actual lid, but the soft black coating, and it was really just wearing at the corners after many years of regular use, so I never really cared about it.

Exactly. Which is why I always considered the Titanium coating as a strange and pointless gimmick. On the other hand, it proved popular, especially among those repelled by the traditional all-black look.

Mine has been wearing slightly around the edges, but I'd hardly say that it looks bad. FWIW, you could probably just scrub the coating off with a light scrub pad and/or a light polishing liquid (like you'd use on a car's paint). I will note that the areas that don't have the coating show fingerprints badly, which is probably why they put the coating on in the first place.

Mine was in great shape until my wife decided to clean it with baby wipes. That took the coating right off!
