Computer Turns off only when power cord plugged in

#1 Post by cmec123 » Tue Sep 09, 2008 10:35 am

On the bottom of the laptop I removed most of the screws including the screws that allow you to remove the keyboard and most of the other screws too on the bottom. Why you may ask, no reason, just did it. I never had this problem ever until removed the screws and putting them back.

The computer only shuts down when the power cord is plugged in. Running off of the battery only I never have this problem.

Please note I have verified the following:
The computer only shuts down at random times only when the Power Cord is plugged into the computer and this never happened before until I removed the screws and put them back in.
I have tested with more than one thinkpad power cord to make sure
Tested with battery in the computer and removed from computer
My thought is maybe I missed putting in a screw on the bottom or maybe there is a ground screw I did not put in. Could my machine have an issue with not being grounded? I am not an electrician but who knows. Could there be something in the motherboard that a screw is missing in therer and not allowing grounding or other?
thanks

Maybe you got a screw, or some screws mixed up, and used a long screw where a short one was required, or the opposite.
This has been known to cause all kinds of problems.

welcome to the forum.

you might want to dl the hardware maintenance manual for your model and double-check that all of the screws are back in the correct locations.

The screw lengths on T4x's are a nightmare, and so I did a pictorial diagram which can be found in the link in the first post in this thread.

Should save having to hunt through the maintenance manual.
