multiple tunnel adapters and how to remove extras

#1 Post by johnp126 » Wed Sep 10, 2008 12:34 pm

We have our own internal apps which use and bind to the network adapters, however this one system has 50+ iptunnel adapters showing up. Its causing issues with our software. Most users have ipv6 turned on but don't get all these extra adapters. Anyone know how to get rid of the extras?

You need to give us a bit more information - what are the 50 tunnels you are seeing, and where?

If I open Device Manager in Vista and then View Hidden Devices, I see about 16 devices. They are not all tunnels and there is some "duplication" in that my security software and VPN software sets up additional devices that are related to the real devices.

Otherwise, on my machine, tunnels stay with the VPN software and don't proliferate (that I am aware of). ... JDH

if you go into cmd> ipconfig/all

you see all these multiple tunnel adapters. I've googled some on it and found that most say its related to IPV6. Some say its related to Virtual PC's.

It was up past 50, but it must delete some as they were not in order.

I will check in device mgr. I have to get that from the user as its not my machine..

Strange. In ipconfig /all, I have one entry for each real adapter, one entry for my tunnel adapter, and one entry for the host machine. Nothing like 50. I use ipconfig quite a bit in all versions of Windows and have never seen that. Good luck. ... JDH

VMware sets up Virtual Network adapaters for NAT and Bridged network devices. These show up in ipconfig /all and also in Device Manager. But they are adapters, not tunnels.

I have always seen these in my machines running VMware (NT, 2000 and XP), but I don't yet have VMware loaded on my Vista machine. ... JDH
