yep, my T42p fan also died

#1 Post by spotter » Thu Sep 11, 2008 12:13 pm

It seems to have been having issues for the past couple of months. Would spin up very fast so I'd feel a vibration in the laptop, but it would maintain a normal temp for the cpu, so I didn't bother.

Today I woke up, and the hand rest was very very warm, as I run linux, I did an "acpi -T" saw the temps were 85-90. went "uh oh". then "cat /proc/acpi/ibm/fan" saw 0 RPM for the fan, went "oh <bleep>". Did a halt, halted fined.

Went to restart, get to bios, then a fan error.

I bought the long fan m10 ($40'ish from IBM), should that fix it? or does my problem sound like something else?

Just replace the fan. I did it on my T42p because it became a bit loud. Paid 23 Euros or so for long fan assembly.

Thank goodness that it seems no damage has been done.

One of the great reasons for running Linux is the huge quantity of free open source software that's available out there.

One such that I always load (and in Ubuntu is available in the repositories) is gkrellm which includes a comprehensive temp and fan monitoring system onto every laptop.

yes, I'm very aware of what's available with Linux, have been maintaining packages for Debian since 1996-7 :)

d*mn IBM ships parts out fast. ordered it yesterday morning, got it today.

Easy to replace (just keep all the screws organized, and have jewler's screwdriver set). I should become an IBM certified laptop repairman :)
