Best CPU upgrade for an R52

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Fri Sep 12, 2008 4:54 pm

I recently acquired a used R52, Type 1858-CTO, based on 1858-W14

Product: ThinkPad R52 1858-W14 [change]
Operating system: All [change]

Original description: Based on 1858-CTO: Celeron M 360(1.4GHz), 256MB RAM, 30GB 4200rpm HDD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 910GML, 24x-8x DVD(slim), Intel 802.11bg wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), Secure Chip, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

It now has a 40GB HD and 2GB RAM (PC2-4200).

To get a better CPU than this measly 1.4GHz Celeron with 400MHz bus, which type CPU is the most 'bang for your buck'?

Following all with 533MHz bus and 2MB Cache:
730 1.60 GHz
740 1.73 GHz
750 1.86 GHz
760 2.00 GHz
770 2.13 GHz
780 2.26 GHz

Am I correct in assuming all of the above are Dothan CPUs?

Yes, pretty much Dothan running at 533.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

Bang for the buck, depends on how many 'bucks' you have to spend. I like the price/value/performance point of the 1.86Ghz 750's.

Careful with going too fast in an R52 that had a Celeron-based motherboard. The Celeron-based motherboards have different chipsets than the Pentium M-based units. The 910GML chipset was not certified or designed to run 533MHz bus processors. I found out first hand. You might have to stick with 400MHz bus processors for stability.

Thanks guys, and especially underclocker.
I would have fallen in that 'trap'!

So based on Harryc's recommendation (750) and prices on fleabay, my next best bet would be the 1.8/400 745.
There are apparently 5 different versions of the 745:
2L7EN (B1) (most common)
SL7EQ (B1)
SL8QZ (C0)
SL8U6 (C0)
SL8U8 (CO)
Guess I'll grab what is available (and cheapest).

The jump from 1.4 to 1.8HGz is not that big, but 2MB cache compared to 1MB would be the real kicker.

SL7EN is the model I have used in the past, probably because as you mentioned it is common.

One of the 1.8's seems like a good idea. I'd try any one of those listed above. I haven't heard or seen any issues with the newer C stepping CPU's on R52's. Definitely report back with the results.
