Panasonic UJ-120 on a R60(Pics)

#1 Post by ZaZ » Sat Sep 13, 2008 4:45 am

I was thinking of picking up a Panasonic UJ-120 off ebay for watching movies on my R60. The ThinkPad drive is a burner and like $400+. I don't really need to burn Blu-Rays on my machine. I was inquiring if anyone knows if I can swap the bezels on the drives to make it fit. My current drive is the UJ-850 DVDRW. Thanks for any help.

I'm not certain why you would want to buy a drive to watch movies. If you current drive is a UJ-850 DVDRW, then not only will it play DVDs, but burn them as well. On top of which the newer generation of TP drives use the "enhanced" interface that isn't the same as the older standard, so most drives won't fit.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

Because I'm starting to get some Blu-Ray discs and I'd like to be able to watch them on my laptop. Buying a new drive seemed a lot cheaper than buying a new notebook with a Blu-Ray drive. I'm well aware of the capabilities of my drive. I looked at the interface on my UJ-850 and it seemed the same as the UJ-120's interface from the picture I found on the internet, at least to my eyes. I could just buy the ThinkPad BD-R, but I don't need to burn Blu-Rays on my laptop and it costs $450. I can get the UJ-120 for about $200 on eBay. I was hoping someone here could tell me whether I could swap the bezels between the drives and whether it'll work. Thanks for the reply.

Upon further review, it seems that the interfaces are not exactly the same. My R60 is sort of male while the UJ-120 is female. Is it possible to swap these connectors to make it work? I don't really care if I break the UJ-850. It doesn't really have much value anyway. Thanks for any help.

Anyone got any tips for getting the image thing to work? The url is right, but not working for some reason. My quotes never work either. Thanks.
