SpeedStep

#1 Post by abbo » Mon Jan 03, 2005 9:04 am

I have a 1.5 GHz R51 and I just don´t like the CPU to throtle down on idle time when I´m using AC power.
The thing is that I can´t seem to be able to fix the CPU at 1.5 GHz, even when I choose "Max Performance" in the BIOS power options it keeps doing it, and if I disable Speedstep the clock gets fixed at the lowest speed (about 300 MHz).

By the way, I´ve been using CPU-Z to check the current clock speed.

Regards.

I suggest that you make sure the ThinkPad power management and property drivers are up-to-date and that properties of those drivers are set for default. Speed-step is part of those drivers IIRC. I don't have a separate Speed-step application on my ThinkPad.

Then, the default setting for Power management is ThinkPad Default. That setting will run the ThinkPad at a lower frequency most of the time (mine runs at 600MHz) and step up to max whenever it needs to (mine maxes out at 1.8GHz). BTW, I have T model.

If you really want to run at max all the time, set the Power Management for Always On. Then you should run at max. This issue was discussed at length a while back, and the consensus was that ThinkPad Default allowed the laptop to run cooler and still provide top performance on demand. YMMV. ... JD Hurst

Setting the Windows power scheme to Always on worked just fine.

Thanx a lot !!!
