Screen flickering after EZ-Serv repair

#1 Post by primedude » Mon Jan 03, 2005 12:38 pm

I recently had my LCD panel replaced after some accidental damage, thanks to ThinkPad Protection. Everything is great (a couple other minor problems with my screen are now gone) but there's now a problem that wasn't here before. Sometimes the screen will flicker when the laptop is moved or the screen is tapped in a certain way. The sensitivity of flickering seems to have something to do with the screen angle as well as (possibly) the amount of time the laptop has been turned on.

I assume this is a loose connection on the LCD data cable, and I took a look at the Hardware Maintenance Manual to see if this is something I could fix myself. However, opening it up to this extent isn't something I'd feel particularly comfortable doing. So my real questions are, a.) is my diagnosis of this problem reasonable? If so, then this is probably a problem that'll worsen with time, and b.) since this problem was incurred on a trip to EZ-Serv, will it have to go back to EZ-Serv for repair, or will my on-site warranty cover a service call?

I could go ahead and report this and find out, but the problem is that this problem is just slightly less reproducible than I would like. I could see there being a situation where it goes to either EZ-Serv or someone comes by for it to be repaired, and they don't see the issue. But, if this is a common occurrence, at least I'd have something to back up my problem report with.

Lovely... I had just decided to give IBM a call after seeing your post (all I needed was a little reassurance :D ) and now I can't reproduce the problem at all. Grrrr.

Look for my posts on this topic. I was having the exact same issue as you. Screen flickering when tapped ever so lightly. However, I think I found out what the problem is.

It depends on what color you're displaying on your screen. I think black, or dark blue is the worse. Say, for example, that you have a predominantly black background displayed... then it seems like any small movement of the screen results in a pretty drastic change in reflected light (or something like that). This makes it seem like the screen is actually flickering, but in reality its just the reflected light. I hope this makes sense.

Try this as an experiment and tell me what you observe.
Later.

I had the same problem when I got mine back from EZServ--I just sent it back AGAIN so they can fix what they broke. This is the second time I have had to send it back to them to fix a problem THEY created (the first time, they put a T40 systemboard in my T42p). See my posting from last week: T42p EZServ?!?! Yeah, Right!

Send it in--it should not be flickering/blanking at all--it is probably the cable.

Good luck, and I hope your next EZServ experience is better than mine :(
