Multiburner (UJ-830B) won't come ready with blank DVD

I have an R50 with a Multiburner (Matshita UJ-830B - FRU 13N6827) that refuses to come Ready with a blank DVD. It reads DVDs OK, and reads & writes CDs, but I can't use it to write DVDs because it won't come ready? The LED just blinks continuously (until I remove it).

If I try to use Nero, Roxio Easy Media, and DeepBurner, they all get to the point of validating there is a DVD present and report the drive is not ready. I've tried several different types and speeds of blank DVDs, but no go.

Anyone have and idea what the problem might be?

Try updating the firmware for the drive to the latest version. Run PC-Doctor drive tests on it.
