T42p battery replacement

#1 Post by tpham33 » Tue Sep 16, 2008 2:30 am

Can someone recommend what battery to buy for a T42p? 6 or 9 cells. What should I look for in a battery?
And where can I get them at a good price? I am looking for a reliable source. The last time I bought a battery online, it did not last very long.
I hear Panasonic batteries are good?
Thanks.

If weight is not a consideration, then a 9 cell is the best choice because it will provide the longest run time on battery. It is heavier than a 6 cell and it sticks out the back of the machine 1.5 in. or so. Try to get an original IBM part, and not aftermarket. I've found the best battery source to be EBay, but you have to be patient.

I have a 9 cell right now but I am debating trying 6 cell+ultrabay slim battery. What is lighter and which one gives more battery life? a 9 cell or a 6 cell+ultrabay slim battery?

There are so many choices on Ebay, hard to know which one to choose...

Ultrabay Slim Battery weight - 280g (0.48 lbs)
6 cell weight - 433.75g
9 cell weight - 480g

Combined -

UB Slim & 6 cell = 713.75g = 1.57lbs.
UB Slim & 9 cell = 760g = 1.68lbs.

Weights were found on the Lenovo site and Thinkwiki

Thanks. I think I'll stick with a 9 cell since it is lighter.

Now I have to figure out which brand and where to buy it.

The figures for the 6 cell and 9 cell look wrong, since the latter should be almost 1 1/2 times the first. On my scales they are 320gm and 460gm.
Work: T42p (XP, UXGA IPS); T60p (XP, UXGA IPS); T60/61 FPad (Win 7, UXGA IPS).
Play: X1 (first gen, Win 7); T450s (Win 7).

Also, the 9 cell sticks out less than 7/8 inch, not 1 1/2 inches.
Work: T42p (XP, UXGA IPS); T60p (XP, UXGA IPS); T60/61 FPad (Win 7, UXGA IPS).

Thanks. That looks more reasonable. But even at 320gm, a 6 cell combined with an ultrabay slim battery would be heavier than a 9 cell.

Who can recommend a good third party brand/manufacturer for 9 cell? IBM's are too expensive.

Well, the figure for the 9 cell came directly from IBM, in fact I linked to it above, so the manufacturer is wrong. The 6 cell figure I got from the Thinkwiki, so anything is possible there.

Edit: Here's the 6 cell page. IBM lists the weight at 325g.
