Can I upgrade from an Intel 2200BG wireless card?

#1 Post by cbuck1 » Tue Sep 16, 2008 1:39 pm

I have a Thinkpad R51 with an Intel 2200BG wireless card. The card is intermittently dropping the connection and I can't figure out why. I've upgraded the drivers. Uninstalled and reinstalled the adapter, and none of my other laptops are having signal problems in the same location. If I plug in a LAN cable, the R51 works fine. I've read of others having problems with this card, but have found no usable solutions. If anyone has any ideas, I'm open.

I'm thinking maybe I should just swap in another card and that may solve the problem. If so, I might as well upgrade to N since my router is BGN. Can anyone suggest an N card that will work in my R51? If not, is there anything else I can swap in for the 2200BG?

I've had problems with the Intel 2200BG cards but I was able to live with them until I upgraded to XP SP3. They didn't work too well after that. :|

At that point, I just went ahead and bought a bunch of the Atheros based ABG cards and started upgrading my laptops. They work great. I have some extras listed here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=66409 :D
Current Thinkpads: 600E, 600X, 701C, A31 (Flexview), R51 (Flexview), R60, T42P (Flexview), TR50E, T60 (Flexview), X61s (Ultralight), Z61m (Ti) Non-Thinkpad: Toshiba 100ct

But the Atheros doesn't support N. Is there some spec I need to know to figure out what cards will be compatible?

virge's G cards will work right away since they're IBM cards. Since IBM did not make any N cards for this model, you will have to use the 1802 hack to get a non-IBM card to work. Once you figure that out, this thread shows where to buy N cards.
