SXGA+ 14.1" on 32Mb Radeon 7500 T42 works

#1 Post by kirpeknots » Tue Sep 16, 2008 2:43 pm

I couldn't find any Thinkpad T4X with a 32Mb radeon mobility 7500 and the SXGA+ (1400X1050) screen in the IBM model list.

I couldn't find a topic on this forum with this specific situation. I had a go on it and bought a screen from a defect T41P and installed it on my 14.4" T42 2373.

It works! Looks a lot better.

Welcome to the forum.

The Radeon 7500 will drive SXGA+ and UXGA panels given the correct cable. But the chip will run hotter. Since it doesn't have the heat spreader on top like the 9000, 9600, X300; even the long fan may not cool it properly. So it may run hot and eventually have solder ball crack failures.

But I think most of us don't care and will run it until the GPU fails. I have a non-MCM (multi-chip-module) version 7500 in an A31 that has been running an UXGA panel for quite a few years.
