7200 rpm vs. 5400 rpm vs. 4200 rpm

#1 Post by OnlyThinkpad » Mon Jan 03, 2005 3:31 pm

Anyone noticed a increased in power draw on their X31 ( or other TPs ) when they upgraqded their hard drive from lower rpm drives to faster ones?

Also I didn't notice a significant speed increase going from 4200 to 5400 rpm and considering upgrading to 7200 rpm drive but am concern power the power draw.

thanks

Any additional power draw is negligible. My CPU remains running at body temperature and my 7200rpm hard drive runs colder than that at 28 degrees C. My battery life didn't change and the machine runs well. I would not give up a 7200rpm drive in a laptop for love nor money.

I should have noted I run a T41

I totally agree - in addition, and I think I read it here, the "fluid mechanics" and all the wonderful gizmos that go into making the disk platters spin are SO wonderful now, it would appear that the 7200 rpm actually uses less power than the older 4200/5400 rpm drives...

i also went from a 4200 drive to a 7k60 drive and i would not change it for anything

it was a great investment

Hi Blake,
I ordered the Hitachi 60G to replace my 80G 4200rpm ( also Hitachi ). It's going to go in my X31 ( P1.5Mhz )

FYI I also have a X40 with P1.2Mhz and there's a substantial speed difference between the two for even when both have 4200 rpm drive. I suspect it's going to be even a bigger difference when I swap the drive on the X31.

Hi mbaha,
Don't know yet. I will let you know after I change it out tonight. Frankly I rather have a slightly noisier drive than a slower one. :-)

Do you feel that the speed of the 4200 in the X40 acceptable, compared to a 4200 in you X31?

I'm thinking about buying an X40 for its size but the 1.8" drive in 4200 rpm is putting me off. I haven't physically compared them, is the X40 worth the size/weight difference for the restrictively slower hdd, less ports, slower cpu??
