Stumped by unusual left mouse button failure R51

#1 Post by barrywohl » Tue Sep 16, 2008 6:28 pm

On one of my R51 laptops (1836 machine type) the upper left mouse has failed, BUT, swapping in a new keyboard did not fix it, AND, the failed button works okay during bootup, at the logon screen, and partway through Windows booting.

It acts like the upper left button is "turned off" but I can't find a setting in mouse control panel (inc ultranav control panel) or in keyboard customization that would do this.

The lower left mouse button works fine. The upper left button works fine during most of bootup and then fails.

I'm using XP Pro sp3. I use about a dozen ThinkPads for my electronic health records. Most are R50p and R51 laptops, almost five years old and still under extended warranties.

I think the next diagnostic step for me is to swap hard drives on two of my R51s and see if the problem stays with the laptop or the hard drive.

I would appreciate any insights.

How about reinstalling the ultranav driver?

This is definitely software, not hardware. I swapped hard drives on two similar 1836 machines. The failure of the left upper mouse stayed with the hard drive, not with the machine.

I'll try reinstalling the Ultranav driver. Good idea.
