It works !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#31 Post by fje » Fri Nov 28, 2008 11:03 am

Yes, it works !!!! :D :D

I bought another 2x256Mb memories in eBay (UK), just got them and it works ! my 600E now has 512Mb RAM (question, why the base 32Mb seems to have dissapeared when I installed the new ones?)

Finally I have my 600E upgraded (I'll not do the step.... hardware upgrade) and I only have to change the display cable I broke when I dissasembled first time the laptop.

Thanks to every one that helped... and kind regards to all....

The memories I got have a label:

SAMSUNG 151
M464S3323CN0-L1L

and are made by 8 small chips per side (that makes 16 small chips per 256Mb memory) branded:

SAMSUNG 151
K4S280832C-NL1L

the same ones you told us in your post. The only difference is that the label in mines says "SAMSUNG 151" and yours "SAMSUNG 153", I don't feel it makes any difference.

BTW, my 600E is a 2645-550, one of the older ones and less probable to be able to upgrade !!!

I also disabled the "paging executive" and defined "LargesystemCache" at "1" following recommendation.

The only problem I still have is that I have to manually enable the processor L2 cache, because PowerLeap CPU ControPanel gives error "unable to load ring0...." either if started with the "Automatically start at startup" or putting it in Init set pf programs to start at startup. And the other utility suggested in another forum "cacheutility" gave a BSOD when I tried it time ago.

Any idea to solve this problem? And any idea about why the 32MB base memory dissapeared?

Regards.

You could have upgrade the processor to 400Mhz, that's what I have in my ThinkPad 600E 2645-4AU. I never heard of or have use the PowerLeap CPU control panel software. I suggest that you reset the computer's BIOS to the factory settings and update the BIOS. What is your BIOS version on your ThinkPad?. I have in my ThinkPad 600E 2645-4AU is BIOS: IBM INET36WW 11/20/1999 (The latest BIOS so far). Look at the screenshot image I use Belarc Advisor on my ThinkPad but I remove certain information from it before I get chastised by the moderators. Did you turned off prefetching? You don't need it on when you have 512MB or more in RAM (memory). Also, try to disable the PowerLeap CPU control panel software and turned off the "System Restore" if you have a small hard drive like under 10 gigabytes size. It will take enough hard drive free space before you know it in a heartbeat.

By the way, I found the post http://www.wimsbios.com/phpBB2/topic4046-825.html

My laptop info

#35 Post by fje » Sat Nov 29, 2008 4:17 am

Keyhole:

1.- My laptop is Thinkpad 600E 2645-550 (one of the earlier models of the series)

2.- BIOS is IHET47WW 09/11/99. Pay attention to the difference in the second character. mine is "H", yours is "N", this implies your laptop is able to have a better BIOS (mine isn't), that needs less mods to upgrade the laptop.

3.- I already upgraded the processor. In fact I installed a Pentium III 600MHZ. My mainboard/BIOS is not able to automatically change the clock speed, so I had to do a small hardware mod. to have the clock running at 100Mhz, and with it, the processor is running at 500Mhz.

4.- That is the maximum speed I can have without further hardware changes. One of the ones I could do is the one seen in the forum/thread/post you refer to in wimsbios, for having the FSB running at 108Mhz, but it is not easy to do the soldings that have to be done. The same is applicable for having the mainboard able to support processors running at even 800MHz, so I decided to stay at 100MHz and the processor running at 500MHz.

5.- Powerleap CPU Control Panel is needed for having the processor using its L2 cache. Once the new processor is put in place, there is a need to disable the L2 cache in the BIOS to avoid an error 127 in bootup time. So, after boot is done, we have to enable again the L2 cache, and this can be done with PowerLeap CPU Control Panel (aditionally it gives similar info to the one Belarc Advisor seems to give to you)

6.- Prefetch: I disabled it, but didn't find much difference, so, I enabled it again to the original value "3".

7.- Finally, wimsbios forum you refer to is a very, very, very valuable info forum. it was the starting point for me (and it seems that for many other people too) to decide to go on with this upgrade of my laptop. It is a loooong thread but the time you need for reading it pays for with a very valuable info and avoid of possible errors or frustations when you feel that you (or your computer) are not able to do the upgrade. It is a very recomendable thread to be read by anyone that plans to do an IBM Thinkpad 600E or 600X upgrade.

Regards.
