X60s suddenly shutting down

#1 Post by CyberDude » Thu Sep 18, 2008 8:13 am

After making some funny beeping noise a few days ago (see my previous thread) my X60s has suddenly started to shut down - it just switched off. This is the second time in 2 days. The event monitor doesn't show any faults.

I've got NHC monitoring the temperatures and the CPU temp is hitting 84C some times. The fan is rotating at full speed (~4700rpm) according to NHC. The X60s is docked on an ultrabase - would this cause it to run hotter?

After it shut down I removed it from the ultrabase and the bottom was very hot. Almost hot enough not to be able to hold your hand on it for too long.

I also noticed the fan makes a ticking noise like something is rubbing on a blade.

I am assuming that it's shutting down due to overheating. Has anyone else experienced this? Is the fan speed quoted above correct or should it be faster?

I gave it a good blow out and some dust did come out. I think I'll open it up and give it a good clean out.
