IBM Video Drivers, 1600x1200 on Dock, ARGGH!!!! (AVOID Dec)

#1 Post by rcw3 » Mon Jan 03, 2005 7:20 pm

Prior to the November release of the IBM video drivers, the highest you could get on an external monitor via the dock was 1280x1024.

When the November release of the IBM video drivers came out, lo and behold 1600x1200 on my external display via the dock began working. WOOT!!!

Today, I noticed a late December update of the IBM video drivers. BAH!!!!! They have once again removed the capability. I reinstalled the November drivers and everything worked fine again.

Why is IBM intent on disabling an ability that obviously is technically feasible???

So, if you want IBM drivers and support for 1600x1200 external, AVOID the December release if you were working fine with the previous install.

Guess it's back to the DNA drivers again.

Huh? Mine goes up to 2048x1536. Maybe you need to install a specific driver for your external display? *shrug*

He's talking about the DVI output on a Dock II... if you go out the VGA port on the right side of the ThinkPad, you can get 2048x1536... but DVI only supports 1280x1024 (unless you use modded Catalyst or Omega drivers- or it seems, the November IBM ATI drivers).

november drivers

#5 Post by nikemen » Wed Jan 05, 2005 12:15 pm

Hi, does anyone have the november drivers for download? I put in the ATI driver, which gets me 1600x on DVI to my dell 20" but I think this driver might be one of the things causing all the SLEEP battery drains.

don't know, but would love to be able to try another driver.

Another question for those of you who are driving the Dell monitors via DVI with the alternative video drivers.

Have you been able to rotate the monitor to portrait mode and display 1200 v 1600 with the DVI connection using those drivers?

I just ordered the Dell Widescreen 2005fpw which I intend to use with a mini-dock via VGA and I was hoping that I would also be able to rotate it to portrait mode for page layout work in MS Word.

Thanks

Windows Update

#11 Post by NathanA » Tue Jan 25, 2005 1:55 am

Hey,

I don't know if it is the same driver or not (and I cannot verify its capabilities since I lack both the Dock as well as a DVI-capable monitor ;-) ), but Windows Update has a driver on the site dated Nov. 30. It fed it to me when I first ran WU on my KXU. If you have the December drivers already on your computer, try downgrading and then going to Windows Update and see if it gives you the same one. Then try to see what res it gives you for DVI output.

I just tried that. It didn't work.

Again - does anybody have the November T42 video drivers?

Hi guys:

My 2373-HVU (shipped 12/27/2004) has worked just fine out of the box driving the external monitor at 1600x1200.

I'm a novice when it comes to this stuff but I would be happy to copy the video driver of this machine and send it to whoever wants it, if that's possible. I'm not sure how to go about it though. Is there a way to pull the driver off my product recovery disk? FYI, according to my device manager, my driver is the following:

ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL T2
DRIVER PROVIDER: ATI Technologies
DRIVER DATE: 8/25/2004
DRIVER VERSION: 6.12.10.6476

To answer my own question, no you can't rotate the 2001fp with the drivers that are currently installed on the thinkpad. Since so many people have had trouble driving the 2001fp at 1600x1200 and mine works out of the box, I'm not going to bother trying to install new drivers just to rotate the screen. It's actually good enough to do full page layout work in Word in the landscape mode so there's really no need to rotate as there would have been on a smaller monitor.

Do you mean external monitor through VGA or through DVI? The issue is DVI which apparently only the November release supports at 1600x1200.

Bill,

I just sent you a 31MB self-extracting file that has the November ATI Driver from IBM, distribution 8.051-040825a for anyone looking for it on the web.

The driver version itself is 6.14.10.4582 for atioglgl.dll and atioglxx.dll.

Daniel.

P.S. The 2D Version number is 6.14.10.6476 (it's the current driver I'm using--on which my 3DMark scores are based below--and you can find this number by going to Display Properties|Settings|Advanced|Options and selecting Details. At the bottom of the details, it lists the 2D Version number).

I'm talking about DVI. My 2001fp is connected via DVI and it's working just fine at 1600x1200

I have a 2001FP connected to my dock's DVI port. Using IBM's current driver, the maximum physical resolution is 1280x1024. The 1600x1200 resolutions is available in the Display Properties dialog, but when I select it, the 2001FP stays in 1280x1024 physical resolution with 1600x1200 virtual resolution. You can only see a 1280x1024 portion of your 1600x1200 display, with the cursor sliding the current view around when it hits the edge of the screen.

Texasdiver - it's possible that you have the November driver pre-loaded. The December driver (with limited functionality) was released on 12/15/04.

Apparently I do have the "November Driver" as it matches the version number referenced by Conmee above. However the driver date that I find in my hardware properties is actually August 2004. So perhaps this is actually the "Aug-Nov Driver" and the Dec-present driver is the one that doesn't work.

Why not use the catalyst drivers?

#21 Post by jaxf250 » Tue Jan 25, 2005 6:46 pm

I have the latest ATI Catalyst driver on my T42P and full 1600x1200 works well, either on my internal 15" LCD or on my 21.3" Samsung TFT. I can also rotate the 213T display CW or CCW without trouble. Thanks to this forum and patje's driver tweak, it works great. I don't do gaming, so perhaps I am not a great judge of their (the drivers I mean) quality, but all my graphics work (Adobe, Visio,...) looks superb.

But from what I've read, you get less battery life with the ATI Catalyst driver. The elusive November IBM driver seems to be the one to get.

Now, how can we get it?

I sent Bill a 31MB self-extracting zip of what I believe are the 'November drivers'. lol. :) So as soon as Bill has a moment, I'm sure he'll put a link up telling all where to get it. I looked for it on the IBM site, but they only list the latest ATI drivers as far as I can tell.

I just discovered that MY KXU which was shipped on 12/31/04 ALSO has the August/November drivers pre-loaded on it as well (version number of backed up driver files matches Conmee's posted version number exactly), so it looks like machines that shipped relatively recently are coming stock with the older drivers that support the higher-res output. I don't have a DVI monitor or the dock, though, so I cannot verify that they can work to drive the DVI output at UXGA resolutions (though others have already done so).

RonS, what version did your Q1U come stock with? It seems surprising to me that your computer, the ship date of which is rather close in proximity to mine and texasdiver's, did not come with the same OS image loaded onto the hard drive.

Also, I just happened to look at the version of the driver that I'm currently running which, as I mentioned earlier, I obtained from Windows Update (and after having been installed, it claims that it is still part of an "IBM" package). I compared it to the current driver version that IBM offers on their web site, and it's actually newer, even though it was released on Windows Update BEFORE IBM released their latest offered version!

IBM's: 8.062.2-041023m-019104C-IBM (released 2004/12/15)
WU's: 8.082.2-041211m-019932C-IBM (released 2004/11/30)

T42 DVI 1600*1200

#30 Post by hecki » Mon Feb 21, 2005 5:45 pm

I have a UK spec T42 (not p), with 32 meg Ati Radeon7500. I installed the november IBM ATI driver, but the DVI still cannot produce the high res my Dell 2001FP would need.
Has someone got a copy of this driver, that actually works on a T42 - either from IBM or modded Catalyst. Could you please send it to me?
