Reinstalling Thinkpad Desktop Wiped-Out with Smith-C Virus

#1 Post by stephens241 » Thu Sep 18, 2008 1:54 pm

My Thinkpad T42 got infected with the Smith and C virus last week. For those of you not yet informed about it, this virus invades the desktop, planting wallpaper with a message announcing your computer is infected with malicious software. In removing the virus, all of my Thinkpad wallpaper and desktop ad-ons were also removed.

My question is: how do I install these useful features (e.g. the Wallpaper that has a calender and amount of disk memory used/remaining)? Is it possible to install this stuff without having to reinstall the entire WindowsXP Operating System? Can somebody provide guidance for me, as I don't want to cause further damage during any reinstallation.

Many thanks for any response.

I think I found it on this site, it is a Russian site, but I have downloaded from this place before safely. Scroll down to Themes and it is the Active Think theme for mobile computer. It comes complete with the wallpaper and new icons and sounds, very neat. Just download the installer and run it from your computer. Then go into the Properties of the desktop and choose that under Themes.

Thanks a lot for replying! I downloaded these from the site you provided without problem --and without evidence of spyware or virusware.

I'm glad it was what you wanted, I also downloaded that Active Think theme; it's pretty cool - it even changes my new mail sound.

On a side note, I just switched from AVG anti-virus to Avast, which has an Spyware scanner for downloads. AVG never had this. Last night I was downloading a few free apps to try out and 4 out of 5 of them set off the alarm in Avast for containing spyware. I actually stops the download and lets you decide what to do. The darn siren though that they use are the alert almost gave me a heart attack. But it did not go off for the download from that Russian site.
