CF & wear leveling ...X40

#1 Post by X32UseR » Fri Sep 19, 2008 2:45 pm

Hello

I wondering what CF card will be the best choice for X40 (as master hdd)

- CF 16GB EXTREME III SanDisk < no UDMA
- LEXAR CF 8GB UDMA x300 < expensive
- PQI CompactFlash 16GB 120x< slow
- Transcend CF 16GB x133 < the sellers says its has 30Mb/sec
- PRETEC CompactFlash x233 32Gb <
- A-DATA Compact Flash 32GB - speedy 40x < only 100$, but slow

If anybody knows witch card have bulid-in "wear levelling" system?
The reliability is top priority for me.

ps. Sorry for my eventually grammar mistakes - english is not my native language

I have an 8G San Disk Extreme III card in my X40 and it shows as using Ultra DMA mode 4 in Device Manager. Maybe it's the adapter (Addonics) that allows UDMA.
There are other minor issues with the card but speed isn't one of them.

Unless Windows is giving wrong information, my Extreme III is UDMA.

You NEED to get AT LEAST 233x, if not 300x else you will suffer.

Wear leveling is built into the controller inside the CF card. Some are more sophisticated than others. It is best that controller and flash chips come from the same manufacturers since they know the strength and weaknesses of the flash chips best.

There are users here who swears by their Addonics adapter. From what I can see, these adapters are passive with no active components between the PATA and CF connectors beside LED and some transistors. I use a no name adapter with a RiDATA card and it operates in UDMA Mode 4.
