Assuming you are using Windows, you can simply change the Power Manager settings to hibernate your system after a specified amount of time. While it's not the same as a total shutdown and you are limited to the time delays that are provided from within Windows, that could work for you.
If you rather have your system go into a complete shutdown, then there appear to be some programs/utilities which allow you to do just that. Google:
automatically shutdown windows
and you should find some freeware programs. I suppose you could also use the DOS shutdown command in a batch file and then use Window's Scheduled Tasks Manager. There's plenty of ways to skin this cat...

Getting extra software to do this is probably overkill. In Win XP Pro (and I assume home) you can run the command "shutdown -s -t time"* to shutdown the computer with a delay.
To run commands, either open a command prompt or just do start -> run. To find out more about the shutdown command, type shutdown -h in a command prompt.
*I'm pretty sure this is the right syntax, but I can't check atm.

Sure - or you can put the above command into a batch file, and then run that batch file as a scheduled event (if, say, you wanted to shut the machine down at xx.00 hours every night or some such).Getting extra software to do this is probably overkill.
