T30 LCD resolution upgrade: is it possible?

#1 Post by aludal » Tue Jan 04, 2005 6:01 am

Just joined this very interesting forum.
Got my used T30 a month ago, souped it up with refurb Netgear 108 MB WG511T so it works in parallel with that internal High Rate Wireless whatever (11 MB) just nice -- anyone interested, can describe installation sequence. I just love this little machine now.

But.
I came from the desktop world of digiphoto/font design with a my mammoth Sony GDM F520 2048x1536, and I miss 130+ dpi screens.
Now my T30 2366-BU4 has native 1024x768 resolution, and it's kinda brutal. Maintenance manual for T30 machines mentions there are 14.1" screens+inverters also in SXGA+ resolution, in both 200 and 150 nit luminances, and I'm wondering how difficult would be to switch/upgrade?

Has anyone done this?

P.S. What the hell the nice, shiny "ThinkPad" button for, BTW?

(OT) Press it and hold down keys R & T whilst rotating the track point 180 degrees anti-clockwise and your laptop will do a spinning bird kick.

oh yeah. thats exactly what I thought when those blue latex faced guys failed to show up, after a lot of pressing it.

So, any luck with upgrading LCDs in T30s? In T4x, maybe? Share your experience, please.

I'm not sure it'll be possible, because the resolution also depends on the video card, which IIRC, is soldered to the board. So even if you can change the panel, the chip might prevent the resolution from going higher.

You can always attach an external monitor ;)

Just because these video chips are ATi Mobility Radeon 7500 with 16 MB SDRAM of graphic memory soldered to mobos all across T30s no matter what their LCD resolutions I guess it's much shorter shot to upgrade LCD within this model's specs than, say, going to add RAM beyond 1 GB limit (which proved to be absolutely doable.)

With $459 under my belt ready to burn (the tag for genuine IBM LCD replacement), I'd be also considering to look closer at some 14.1" cheapo Samsung/NoName 1600x1200 300 nit upgrade with improved back reflector/polarizer, too. Naturally, with whatever generic inverter it might take in native T30's geometry. 16 MB of ATi 7500 would drive this one just fine, too.
