My CD-drive has gone

#1 Post by kiig » Thu Jun 03, 2004 3:37 pm

No, - noone stole it, - but I don't have my usual D: drive in My Computer :-)

running XP Pro : System/Hardware/Device Manager reports "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"

Re-seated the drive, - same thing. My A31p discovered the 'device', - but still reported the above.

My Ultrabay works fine with my other harddrive, - so it appeared to be the drive, - and before trying to swap drives with a friend, - I called IBM tech Support, just for any suggestions, and they said "Yes, - it's defintively the drive, - it's the hardware" before I could say any more than the error message my XP reported... and they'll ship a new drive , - no worries there.

But does it sound right, - that a cd-drive can 'die' just like that.... ? and still be able to eject the cd, - spin it up and all.

Have anyone heard about this ?

Obviously I'll know if IBM tech support was right when I receive the drive, - now I'm just curious... :-)
