sorry I cant offer any solutions to your problem, but I am interested about how you upgraded your processor. What kind of CPU did you originally have in your a20m? And did you have any problems finding a compatible 1GHz that could run on your machine?
Any tips or info you picked up along the way would be appreciated, because I too am interested in upgrading my cpu but I'm a complete novice. Cheers

CPU upgrade
Well, it depends on what cpu you had to begin with, if you have a celeron or a pentium 3 500, you must replace the motherboard, if you have a p3 700 you can drop in a 1ghz 100mhz fsb mobile chip. I had a celeron 550 so I had to change the board. 13p3156 for 14 and 15" xga displays can be had on ebay for 35-45 dollars and will support 1ghz after a bios flash. you need to install it using your old chip, and then flash the bios then install the new chip.
If you try puting the 1ghz on a celeron board, it will only boot at 700 and you will have stability issues (lockup on reboots, not cold starts though)
Could never figure that one out.
Anyways, the assembly and dissasembly instructions can be found on IBM's support site
Good luck

thanks for the info!
In my case (12.1" Display, Celeron 500MHz), this upgrade would definately be in the "easier to just buy a new laptop" category, since a new system board would only support 14 and 15" displays.
I am wondering if it would still be possible though, to upgrade to a P3 600 or 700Mhz while keeping the current system board and everything else intact, and if even such an upgrade would be worthwhile?
cheers.

You most likely have an integrated CPU that can not be removed/replaced in that unit.jagsman wrote:thanks for the info!
