Best Windows OS for ITunes on 600x?
Best Windows OS for ITunes on 600x?
I have a 600x with 256MB Ram that I've been happily running Puppy Linux on for a few months.
However, I recently bought an external hard drive (a Drobo) with the idea of keeping all my mp3s on there, and controlling them from my TP anywhere in the house.
After exploring some options (mt-daapd), it seems like by far the easiest way of sharing the music on the external hard drive so that my Mac and my TP could see it, would simply be to install Windows on my TP.
Which is the best Windows OS to use?
Thanks for your time!

Assuming your 600X is 500Mhz (or even if it's the rarer 650Mhz) and also assuming you have 64MB and 128MB modules, you'd be better off increasing your RAM to 448MB by dumping the 64MB module and replacing it with a low-density 256MB module. I run my 600X at the maximum of 576MB and Windows XP is just tolerable.

I've installed XP on hundreds of PIII 500's back in the day.
I don't see why XP would run bad on a 600x just keep the bloatware off it.
You also might try TinyXP or MicroXP. I used TinyXP on an A31p the other day and it ran phenomenally it just flew, granted that was a P4 but I was amazed at how fast that machine ran in XP.
I'm going to try it on a 380z later tonight and see how it runs.

I agree that XP is just tolerable on a 500mhz machine. I've run it on a couple upgraded 600E machines and a 770X both with 500mhz cpus.rkawakami wrote:Assuming your 600X is 500Mhz (or even if it's the rarer 650Mhz) and also assuming you have 64MB and 128MB modules, you'd be better off increasing your RAM to 448MB by dumping the 64MB module and replacing it with a low-density 256MB module. On the 650mhz 600X machine though XP worked quite well for office and web browsing applications. Youtube, Divx, and Xvid movies worked no problem.
I've recently started playing with Windows 2000. Right now I have it installed on a 240x (192mb memory, 500mhz PIII). It has many of the same features as XP but is a lot faster.
Current Thinkpads: 600E, 600X, 701C, A31 (Flexview), R51 (Flexview), R60, T42P (Flexview), TR50E, T60 (Flexview), X61s (Ultralight), Z61m (Ti) Non-Thinkpad: Toshiba 100ct
