I'm trying to enable my wifi card in PHLAK (professional hackers linux assult kit)
PHLAK is a modified knoppix distro, loaded with security tools. I'm doing an independant study in network security for college-- not performing lame hacks as our script-kiddie friend has since shown us.
Anyhoo, fn+f5 isn't working... any ideas?
thanks!

two words........
MORE INFORMATION
if you're using the intel 2100 card it(linux) might recognize it
if you're using the intel 2200 card it(linux) won't recognize it
just go to a PHLAK forum if you're doing an "independent study in network security" or next time try Google...perhaps something like ___<insert your card here>__ driver for Linux.
More than likely you're using a bootable cd hence you won't be able to save the driver configurations so you're going to have to go out and do some research on which wifi cards are compatible with PHLAK.
In my experience the Orinoco Gold b or b/g card has worked flawlessly for the monitor mode in which you will need to set to be able to do your "independent studies."
so I lied this was more than two words, but don't post a question like this over here go to the PHLAK forum and ask over there, as you know yourself there's nothing wrong with the Thinkpad notebook itself.
P.S. PHLAK has pre-compiled scripts for those "lame hacks" you claim not to be using. Show some respect for those who actually wrote the scripts

fn+f5 won't work in linux (without additional software) because it is not a hardware rf switch. You have to switch the wireless card on using some software. You need to post the model of your wireles card, if you want more specific help.
As lvlolvlo pointer out the driver for Intel PRO/Wireless 2100B is called ipw2100 and supports monitor mode, and can work with kismet and other programs.
Driver for Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG is ipw2200 which is quite new and not as mature as ipw2100 and doesn't support many functions such as monitor mode or WPA. So using this card you can't perform an independent study in network security. You have to purchase an additional PCMCIA card (preferably with external antenna connector and a chipset that is good supported in linux)

IBM ThinkPad T42 2378-FVU: Pentium M 735 (1.7GHz), 768MB RAM, Radeon 9600 64MB, 14.1" SXGA+, Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG
wow- such little faith in me;
and no, i'm not calling the scripts lame, they are quite amazing actually-- just the people who use them for malicious attacks without any knowledge of what's actually going on, i'm calling lame.
and yes, i am doing an "independant study" on network security for college credit. beats the hell out of going to class...
thanks for the help, though. its is a 2200- and it sucked getting it to work properly in windows.
