t42 vs. t42p
t42 vs. t42p
hi
i´m currently into buying a new laptop and i´ve come to the conclusion that i want it to be a 15" t42 with a radeon 9600 64mb.
now i´m just curious as to what exactly is the big difference between this
t42 and a reasonably more expensive t42p with nearly the same stats
except perhaps a firgl t2 for the graphics.
by the way :does the t42 have the same measurements as a t42p (both 15" flexview, and does there exist 15" screens on the t series that aren´t
flexview displays?
thanks for your attention and fire away with your answers

As stated above, the t42p has a different video card, the fire gl t2. The card uses the same chipset as the 9600 in the t42 you are looking at, but it has an extra 64mb of memory and the driver is designed to work with CAD programs not games. If you are looking for a gaming card, go for the 64mb, it's cheaper and more stable for games. The T42p also has bluetooth included on all models versus just some for the T42. The T42p 15" also has the 1600x1200 which I hear is beautiful. I chose the 14" model because of the footprint, but that much real estate is pretty great. So unless you are a cad deisgner or you just have to have the top of line, go for the t42, my roomate just got one, they are very nice.

Actually, it's the drivers that make the difference, as both use the MR9600 core. For games, I think the preferred configuration is a modded Catalyst/Omega driver and the FireGL. The extra 64MB VRAM is well worth it for all the newest games using large amounts of VRAM for textures, etc. The only reason to recommend the MR9600 w/64MB as a 'gaming' GPU is if you don't want to fiddle around with non-IBM graphics drivers. But even still, the MR9600 v. FireGL will only net about an 6-11% increase in gaming performance, drivers be [censored]. Unless you're willing to go the modded driver/overclocking route, the FireGL with the larger VRAM is still the way to go, IMHO.gcchatel wrote:If you are looking for a gaming card, go for the 64mb, it's cheaper and more stable for games.
