Trouble with sleep on T400
Trouble with sleep on T400
Hi all,
I have almost new T400 with Vista 32bit. I have noticed strange behavior with sleep function - sometimes, when I activate sleep (by pressing power button), screen blanks, but computer does not enter sleep mode (sleep light does not turn on), and I can no longer get computer to work.
I assume that this is due to some service / not responding program, but I have no clue what could this be. I've tried various power plan settings (from Maximum performance to Energy star), but the same thing happens on all of them.
Does anyone has similar experience? Is it mandatory to use Lenovo power manager due to the functions with switchable graphics, or should I maybe uninstall it? Also, is there a list of useless lenovo services/programs that can be removed?
Many thanks in advance for the help,
Kind regards,
Hrvoje

Hello,
please try to press FN+F4 to put it in sleep.
I would leave the powermanager, cause of the option to switch
graphics and it will take care of your battery, too.
I would suspend unwanted programs like for example CSS or Private Disk and may be R&R from start up entries.
The trial version of TuneUp Utillities can do this in a comfortable
manner.
Uninstall Norton and use Antivir or AVG instead. Don´t use third
party fire walls, windows has a good one.
regards
Andreas

I have the EXACT same problem. It seems to happen randomly right now. It happens for both sleep and hibernate.
If you look closely, the hard drive activity light is blinking very dimly and rapidly.
I am using Vista 64 bit.
I am guessing it is something running that is messing things up, but I have yet to figure out what.

I got the Thinkpad W500 with Vista32 and had similar problems. Sometimes the screen went black and the computer did not enter standby. Also had problems with shutdown and resume from standby sometimes. This problem started after a upgrade of power manager software i believe so i figured it had to do with the power manager. Then I disabled the "Automatic optical drive power off" and the problems seems to be solved. I'm not sure if you have the same problem since this is another Thinkpad model, but most of the software, drivers and hardware is the same for the T400/T500 and W500. They all use the same power manager software.
I doubt that antivirus is the problem. I do not have any antivirus software installed. I just use windows built in firewall.
The optical drive shutdown seems interesting. I will give that a shot. However, will I be able to turn it off manualy to conserve battery power?

In my case the antivirus is for sure not the problem and i only been using the windows firewall. My computer is also a clean install of Windows with minimal crap installed. Been using nod32 and tried the new Norton Antivirus 2009 with the same problem and i believe it started after a upgrade of the power manager software. Not had this problem since i disabled the "optical drive power off" feature. I have not found a way to manually power off the optical drive, but since that caused my problem a manual power off might cause the same problem so i don't think i want to use such a feature anyway. If you are going to disable this featuere and test i guess manually power off the optical drive (if possible) might ruin the whole test since that might actually be the reason why it happen.
I don't think this feature make a huge difference and instead of a battery that last 15 minutes longer i want a computer that is stable. Maybe it will be fixed in a future version power manager, a driver og whatever is causing the problem.

I was just being lucky
Today I have experienced sleep problem again. I was using a computer in Maximum power scheme, and I have, since last startup, turned off wireless adapter by switch on the front side.
After I pushed sleep button, screen was turned off, but the sleep mode was not reached - I also could not use computer any more, i've tried pushing all the buttons, but nothing happened.
I've explored system log, and it seems that wireless service, NETw5v32 was causing the problem - I have large amount of events with the following description in my log:
The description for Event ID 5005 from source NETw5v32 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
These events were written to log during the time my machine was unresponsive.
Are there any new insights into this problem?
Many thanks in advance,
Kind regards,
Hrvoje
